what is the material used to make firemen's special protective clothing?

the one that keeps them from being burnt. pls elaborate on how does it works (the material) and if the material is used for other purposes too. thanks!

  2. One part of it is the fiber sold by DuPont as Nomex [TM] which is a high temperature polyamide [the same polymer family that contains nylon]. I think it is poly meta phenylenediamine terephthalate, but I am not certain. It has an absurdly high use temp. It is chemically very close to Kevlar, also a TM of DuPie's
